With seconds remaining, the ball flew 30 yards from the hands of Joey Perfetto, who seconds later leaped in the air with joy with his Newsome teammates.
That's because the throw-in from Perfetto caromed off the head of a leaping Matt Staggs and into the back of the net.
The final whistle blew seconds later, sealing a 3-3 tie with Plant.
"We know that play is always a possibility," Newsome coach Neal Rickmers said. "Perfetto is a real weapon with the way he can throw it on these narrow fields."
The final goal put an end to a game that Plant (3-2-2) appeared to have in control through the first 60 minutes as it led 2-0. Newsome (5-1-2) came back to tie it with goals by Skylar Wilkes and a header by Perfetto.
Then, with less than 2 minutes remaining, the referee ruled that Ricky McEwen was tackled in the box. McEwen followed with a penalty kick that put Plant up 3-2.
"We let down just a little while Newsome stepped it up after they got down," Plant coach Chris Carbon said. "Hopefully we learned we can never let down."
