Tampa Prep boys basketball coach Joe Fenlon was concerned his players would look past Tuesday night's game against Tampa Catholic in anticipation of Friday's rematch with rival Berkeley Prep.
With memories of last year's loss to Tampa Catholic on their minds and a motivational pregame speech by Fenlon, the Terrapins dominated TC in a 66-45 victory.
Senior guard Jamal Cherry led Tampa Prep (17-4) with 20 points. Sophomore Devontae Morgan added 16 points, which including making 11 of 12 free throws.
"They didn't look past them," Fenlon said. "Some kids can look down (the road), but they didn't do it tonight."
The Terrapins led 34-24 at the half and outscored the visiting Crusaders 21-9 in the third quarter to build a 22-point lead. With 4:45 left in the game, Tampa Catholic's leading scorer, junior point guard Lashawn Harrison, fouled out with 14 points. Without Harrison, Tampa Catholic (19-5) couldn't muster enough offense to pull within single digits.
Sophomore Austin Aikens added 13 points, while senior David Gonzalez finished with 12 for Tampa Catholic.
