The matchup everyone wanted didn't disappoint.
No. 2 seed Mitchell facing off against No. 1 seed Hudson in the Class 4A-District 7 final. The teams split the regular-season series, and the Mustangs, in their first year in 4A, were trying to stop the Cobras from winning three straight district titles.
Hudson (16-3-1) prevailed Friday, defeating Mitchell 2-1 in the second overtime in a game clouded by heavy fog and a rowdy crowd that included the boys teams from both schools cheering on their female counterparts.
Hudson scored first, less than two minutes into the game when leading scorer Alicia Schuering put in a pass from Erica Wills. The Mustangs (12-2-1) answered with five minutes left in the first half when Leslie Fallon picked up a goal.
"I thought we dominated the game in many aspects," Mitchell coach Karl Kukec said. "Luck didn't seem to be on our side. This game came down to one mistake."
That mistake came 56 scoreless minutes later in the second overtime. Hudson's Karlie Lampheir was able to send a through ball to Schuering, who delivered on a 20-yard, game-winning chip shot over the keeper's head.
"I didn't do anything tonight," said Schuering, who, as a senior, has three district titles. "It was all my teammates. They did all the work. We got (the title) together."
