The trouble for Indian Rocks Christian started the minute Tampa Prep saw Friday's newspaper story in which IRC claimed it was ready for Friday night's Class 2A-District 9 final.
"We pinned the article to the locker room wall," Tampa Prep coach Cindy Schofield said. "You know, that really got us fired up. I mean we beat (IRC) 8-0 the last time we played."
Make that consecutive 8-0 results.
In fact, only 52 minutes after it began, Tampa Prep had reached the eight-goal mercy rule and sealed its fifth consecutive girls district soccer title.
Leading the way was sophomore forward Colby Maffei, who scored a personal best of five goals, four in the first half.
"She has matured a lot from the beginning of this year," Schofield said. "(Maffei) has scored goals, but she has also been great with the assists. She's playing great."
Throughout the game, Tampa Prep (14-5-4) didn't go more than 10 minutes without scoring. Jackie Rosenthal, Alyssa Bryant and Lauren Knoke added one goal apiece.
Knoke arguably had the most dramatic goal of the night, lofting a ball from 40 yards that fell in the net's left corner, inches over the outstretched fingers of the IRC goalkeeper.
"We're just focusing on playing good soccer right now," Schofield said. "We want to reach that goal of making the state final four (for the third consecutive year)."
