Newsome coach Kelly Townsend was quick to remind her team before the district tournament that the second-seeded Wolves had not won a title from the No. 1 spot. Newsome captured its second consecutive Class 5A-District 8 title by defeating East Bay 3-0 on Friday.
The Wolves might have felt slighted after getting the No. 2 seed after tying at East Bay in the regular season and having the seed decided by a tiebreaker.
"It was huge for us to come out here and take back what was ours," Townsend said. "We had a little hiccup in the regular season, but tonight we were ready to play."
The Wolves got two goals on set pieces by sophomore midfielder Caroline Evers, who said the win was a statement in what has become a rivalry.
"When we found out we were No. 2 after how hard we worked all season, in practice and it didn't show in the standings ..." Evers said. "We wanted to come out and prove we were the best in the district."
Newsome took little time taking the advantage in Friday's final on a cross from Shea Rhoney to a waiting Jackie Simpson who put it in in the sixth minute.
Wolves junior Karina Gutsche got a breakaway in the 51st minute, but was taken out in the box to set up a penalty kick, which Evers converted.
Evers scored the final goal on a corner kick that was mishandled in the 60th minute.
