An early goal by Abby Meckley was all Plant needed to earn the Class 6A-District 8 girls soccer title as a strong defensive performance gave the Panthers their second consecutive district title with a 1-0 victory against Bloomingdale on Friday night.
Connor Zwetsch created the chance for Meckley in the fourth minute, making a strong run before centering into the penalty area where Meckley fired home.
From then on, neither side held the upper hand for long, the Bulls' passing giving them as much of the play as the Panthers. But the Panthers' defense, led by center back Amy Werdine, restricted the Bulls to shots from long range, none of which seriously tested goalkeeper Lauryn Bodden.
"It was key," Panthers coach Steve McGill said. "We didn't have any miscommunications back there. They played safe, played safe balls out. We did a really nice job of covering each other tonight; when one stepped up, another always dropped back just in case. They were really active on the defensive end."
Bloomingdale coach Sue Peet was disappointed considering as well as her side played, it wasn't able to find a way through the Panthers' defense.
"I thought we had a lot of the play," Peet said. "We couldn't do anything in the final third tonight. We made a mistake in the first five minutes, and that was the game."
