Laurie' Beaty, Jefferson's leading scorer, needed 27 points Tuesday night to reach the 1,000-point milestone. The junior guard got to 25 in the third quarter against Tampa Bay Tech and nearly got the two she needed with a buzzer beater at the end, but the ball bounced off the rim.
Beaty's team got the victory it wanted, though, winning 62-39.
Beaty set the tone early, scoring 14 points in the first quarter to help the Dragons take a 23-10 lead.
"She was the difference early on," Jefferson coach Tom Mosca said. "I mean, she just lit it up."
Jefferson led by 11 at halftime and pulled away in the third, using an 18-4 run for a 19-point lead. Jefferson closed the game with 13-8 run, which was nearly a 15-8 run if Beaty had made her final shot.
"I was like, 'Just make it, just make it, just make, oh, it hit the rim, oh, oh, oh,'" said Beaty, who will get a shot at 1,000 on Friday night against Hillsborough. "If I would have made it, I probably would have went home, went to church, something."
HENSON HITS BIG MARK: Junior Amber Henson scored her 1,000th point with Sickles on Tuesday. Henson scored 26 points in a win over Steinbrenner, giving her 1,465 for her career - including 440 as a freshman in Texas before transferring.
