Tom Mosca, a girls basketball mainstay in Hillsborough County since 1975, is moving out of the state and returning to the college coaching ranks.
Mosca is leaving his position as the Jefferson High girls basketball head coach to join new Air Force Academy coach Andrea Williams as an assistant. One of the players Mosca will be helping develop is former Tampa Catholic standout Colette Eule.
"I know the Jefferson administrators will hire the best person for the job," Mosca said. "I want to tell the girls to stay together and finish what we started."
For 35 seasons, Mosca has been at the forefront of championing girls basketball in the county. He began his coaching career at Robinson in 1975, the inaugural year for Florida's venture into girls basketball. The Knights were soon ranked No. 1 in the state, as were some of his Brandon High teams in the 80's.
The past seven seasons, Mosca's helped turn Jefferson into one of the top programs in the state. This past season, the Dragons reached the state final four for the first time in school history. In 1989, he became women's coach at the University of Tampa, where he won Sunshine State Conference championships and qualified for the NCAA Tournament.
Williams was an assistant at UT for a short stint during Mosca's tenure. He returned to high school coaching when the UT job became a full-time coaching position, forcing him to choose between his teaching position with the county.
"Andrea always said when she got a head coaching job, I would be the first phone call," he said.
