Hillsborough High senior guard Al'von Woodard sank a 3-pointer as time expired Thursday night to give the West All-Stars a 105-103 victory against the East All-Stars at the annual Tampa Bay Basketball Coaches Association Senior Boys All-Star Game at Tampa Prep.
On the final play, Wharton's Damian Dixon rebounded a missed free throw and dribbled down the length of the court and found Woodard on the wing.
"(I was thinking) I hope it goes in," said Woodard, who had 17 points to be named the West All-Star MVP.
The West trailed by as much as 24 points in the second half.
Newsome senior Jake Hodges, who finished with 20 points, six rebounds and two assists, which included a behind-the-back pass from halfcourt to Riverview's Brandon Samuels for a dunk, was selected the East MVP.
The West All-Stars hit the trifecta by also claiming the slam dunk and 3-point shooting contests. Blake's Michael McFarland won over the judges in the final round of the dunk contest after throwing down a one-handed tomahawk while pretending to talk on a cell phone. Tampa Prep guard Jamal Cherry beat out Bloomingdale's Tim Coffey with six 3s.
Cherry, Woodard, Hodges and McFarland are some of the players who will participate in the Hillsborough vs. Pinellas Boys All-Star Game at Hillsborough Community College on March 19. The girls game will begin at 6 p.m., followed by the boys game.
