Raiders golf aiming low

»  Comments | Post a Comment

The Raiders golf team returns two players who made the regional tournament last season, and with a pair of talented freshman added to the mix, expectations are low.

That is, in golf terminology.

Raiders head coach Meg Cimino thinks her 2010 squad should be able to shoot much lower scores than what was a good set of results last season.

"Last year, we shot in the 220s most matches," Cimino said. "This year, I will be upset if we don't hit around 180 - and I want my players to know that."

Belinda George and Kelsey Jensen did well enough to reach the Region 2A-4 tournament as sophomores last season. George carded a round of 79 to finish 10th at the regional level.

They return, as do senior Carli Copeland, junior Shelby Johnson and sophomore Savannah Lawson.

And there's a ninth-grader who just might be the best of the lot. Kelli Hurst shot a 38 for nine holes last week.

Brook Wyatt is another promising freshman.

"It's very exciting to not know who the top four are going to be; it's not set yet," Cimino said. "And the girls are starting to realize what it takes to truly build a team, too. They're not so much concerned with their own selves as they are helping one another."

Plant City returns to Walden Lake after having to play home matches at River Hills the past two seasons.

On Tuesday, the Raiders were set to play Durant, a team that has state title aspirations this season.

The next home match for the Raiders boys and girls is Sept. 21 against Bloomingdale. Cimino encourages fans to attend the matches, which typically begin at 3 p.m.

"We got some support last season - of course from parents, but a few students started showing up," Cimino said. "The players really appreciate that; having their peers cheering them on means a lot. But we'd like to see a few more fans come out."
