Chris Hovan, known for his tenacity as a defensive lineman in the NFL with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and Minnesota Vikings, has joined the Chamberlain High football coaching staff, according to Chiefs coach Joe Severino.
As big a coup as this is – adding someone with more than a decade of NFL experience to the staff – Severino was matter-of-fact about it.
"A friend of mine knew him and I needed a D-line coach, so he introduced us," Severino said. "(Hovan) wants to coach."
Hovan, who played collegiately at Boston College, has already taken over the weight room at the school as Chamberlain players have started a new lifting cycle for the spring. Severino admits he's impressed. He said coaching is about wanting to be there and Hovan has already shown he wants just that.
"He's very enthusiastic. He's got a lot of go in him," Severino said.
Hovan, 32, played five seasons for the Bucs (2005-09) after being signed as a free agent from the Vikings, for whom he played five seasons (2000-04). The Cleveland native signed with the St. Louis Rams in 2010, but was placed on injured reserve due to a back injury.
