Despite dominating possession for much of the Class 3A-Region 3 final, the Berkeley Prep boys soccer team suffered a heartbreaking 1-0 double-overtime loss to Fort Myers Bishop Verot at Viking Stadium on Friday night.
Vikings senior James Gibson scored on a diving header on an assist from fellow senior Andrew Palumbo with 30 seconds remaining in the second overtime.
Had the game gone another 30 seconds, it would have been settled in penalty kicks.
"I thought we dominated the possession," Buccaneers coach Timothy Cooper said. "We had some shots in the first half that we should have buried, but we didn't. We created enough opportunities that we should have got one."
Berkeley Prep's best chance to score after regulation came when sophomore Tyler Sacone had a through ball kicked to him inside the Verot box.
Verot (22-3) beat Berkeley Prep (18-3-3) in last year's region final, 2-1, and went on to win the Class 3A state title.
Gibson and Palumbo are the Vikings' lone returning starters from that squad.
"Both teams were fantastic," Verot coach Tom McGlinn said. "Every year they are fantastic. Our goalie made some great saves and kept us in it."
