It was two games, two dominating victories and a first Class 4A-District 7 championship for the Mitchell High girls soccer team.
Mitchell, relentlessly pressuring on the offensive end most of the game, used goals by Danielle Gottwik in the first half and Arielle Anahory in the second to cruise to a 2-0 victory over visiting Gulf on Friday.
"We've been playing technically well all season," Mitchell coach Karl Kukec said. "Each game with Gulf has been close, so we knew what to expect against them. From now on (the players) know that it's up to them to see how far they go (in the state playoffs)."
After splitting the regular-season series, the Mustangs left little doubt as to this match's outcome. Mitchell (20-2-1) spent nearly the entire first half in the Gulf (17-2-2) end, but failed to capitalize on several outstanding scoring chances, including a 2-on-0 breakaway. Finally, Shannon Estes-Larkin intercepted a Gulf clearing pass, made a move from the left side and passed in front to Gottwik.
Kukec cited Gottwik's goal as the spark his team needed.
"The girls from both teams knew coming in that this was for a district championship, so everyone's nervous," Kukec said. "The first five minutes, it's just a matter of adjusting."
