Playing on a field that resembled a pigpen more than a soccer pitch, the Steinbrenner High girls soccer team won a second straight Class 4A-District 9 title with an 8-0 win over Strawberry Crest on Friday.
It was a rough night to advance the ball, but Cici Gonzalez, who scored three goals and had five in the districts, said the team had experience playing in the mud after some early-season games played in downpours.
"It was tough because the ball would just hit the ground and stop,'' Gonzalez said. "We just had to work around it and we have to do things like that and make adjustments if we want to go to states.''
The Warriors didn't just have a lot of offense as goalkeeper Stephanie Hirsch had eight saves and the defense barely allowed Strawberry Crest any scoring opportunities. It was the 18th shutout of the year for Steinbrenner.
The Warriors jumped out to an early lead when Alexis Bredeau scored on a break off a pass from Gonzalez and Lauren Garris added another goal minutes later to make it 2-0. Nicole Hollifield scored on a feed from Katelynn Snyder a minute later and the rout was on.
Garris had two goals, and Danielle Eule also scored for the Warriors.
