Just like the previous day in the district semifinals, the Tampa Prep girls soccer team got off to a sluggish start. But once the Terrapins began scoring Friday night, it was a virtual waterfall.
Leading 1-0 at halftime, Tampa Prep scored six goals to put away Bishop McLaughlin, 7-1, to win the Class 2A-District 9 title at Indian Rocks Christian.
The win allows Tampa Prep to host a region quarterfinal game, while Bishop McLaughlin will have to hit the road to start region play.
Colby Maffei's three goals led the way for the Terrapins in a game that seemed far different than the previous evening, despite the slow start.
"They're a good team, we just needed to keep playing and not force it," Tampa Prep coach Cindy Schofield said. "We knew once we got the first one then the second one would come and then third. They came in bunches. We just had to be patient."
Terrapins midfielder Amber Miller suggested it was easy for the offense because she and her teammates didn't have to worry about the defense.
"The defense played amazing," Miller said. "It's good to have a defense like that because it makes us all comfortable (on offense). Nice to always know you don't have to go back (and play defense), that you can continue to go forward.''
