The streak comes to an end.
The Wiregrass Ranch High girls soccer team knocked off River Ridge, 3-2, on Friday night, giving the Bulls their first Class 4A-District 8 title and ending the Royal Knights' remarkable consecutive-title run at five.
The Bulls (21-2-2) jumped out to a lead in the fourth minute as forward Berlin Waters scored her 20th goal of the season. The Royal Knights (20-3-2) tied the score five minutes later as forward Jenny Karl got an open-net goal when sophomore keeper Dayton Wetherby missed a clear.
Wiregrass made the score 3-1 before halftime on goals by Anne Cypriano and Christina Wojaczyk in the 19th and 49th minutes, respectively. River Ridge pulled to one as forward Jessica Tata scored at the 45th minute.
The Royal Knights had numerous chances to tie the game, but a great save by Wetherby sealed the win. In the 77th minute, Tata had a clean breakway, but a charging Wetherby knocked down Tata's shot.
"They knew what tonight meant and just went out and did it," first-year Wiregrass coach Erin Dodd said, moments after an ice-cold water-jug shower. "They felt no one had a lot of respect for them before the season, and now, that should change."
