In two meetings this season, the Pasco High boys soccer team had scored 13 goals against Hudson without allowing any. But in Friday's Class 4A-District 7 final, it was the Cobras doing the shutting out.
Jonathon Mendez scored of his two goals in the fifth minute to lead the Cobras to a 2-0 victory and the right to host Sunlake in a region quarterfinal Thursday.
Pasco (20-2) will travel to Land O' Lakes in another 4A-2 quarterfinal. Until the Hudson loss, the Pirates' only loss had been a 3-2 decision against Land O' Lakes.
"I'm speechless," Hudson coach Jeff Wills said. "I knew they had it in them. They have peaked at the right time."
Pasco, playing without injured leading scorer Eric Garcia, played a physical game, and it was costly. The Pirates lost Dillon Dunbar to a blue card (which does not carry an automatic suspension) for dragging down Hudson's Jeffrey Wills in the first half. Pasco then lost Jose Flores to two yellow cards in the second. Pasco was served with five yellow cards to one for Hudson.
Mendez scored his second goal of the game in the 49th minute. Cobras keeper Dylan Crawford came up with several big saves for the shutout.
