The Tampa Prep boys soccer team ran into its first frustrating moment on the road to what could be consecutive state championships, but the Terrapins handled it with relative ease.
The defending Class 2A state champion Terrapins (15-4-1) struggled to capitalize on early scoring chances Friday night in the Class 2A-District 9 final against Bishop McLaughlin (18-5-0), but they ultimately pulled away to win 4-0, outshooting the Hurricanes, 37-3.
"It's a long road (to the state championship), and it's not going to get any easier," Tampa Prep coach Doug Smith said.
Tampa Prep led 1-0 at the break despite outshooting Bishop McLaughlin, 18-1. But the Terrapins exploded for three goals in the first 11 minutes after the break to put the game away.
Jordan Hayes had two goals and an assist. Alex Politis and Gustavo Pires had the other Terrapins goals.
Both teams will play next week in the region quarterfinal round, with Tampa Prep at home and Bishop McLaughlin on the road.
The teams could face each other again in 10 days should they win their quarterfinal matchups. That game would take place at Tampa Prep again.
