Paced by Darius Page's 138 rushing yards, Wharton beat Freedom, 28-7, in a battle of the two New Tampa high schools Friday night.
Page was the Wildcats' workhorse, rushing 27 times. The senior tailback scored from 19 yards and added a 2-point conversion.
Wharton quarterback Chase Litton ran for one touchdown and found Vernon Hargraves for another score. He found the junior receiver twice for 61 yards. On defense Hargraves' 72-yard interception return set up one of the Wildcats' scores.
Tyrel Nunn gained 119 yards on 15 carries for Freedom. His 58-yard run gave the Patriots their only touchdown.
Deon Samsom finished Wharton's scoring with a touchdown from 3 yards. He gained 25 yards on six carries on the scoring drive.
Wharton hosts Bloomingdale on Thursday in a Class 8A-District 6 matchup. Freedom will play at Gaither on Thursday in a Class 7A-District 7 game.
