Jesuit golfer Brian Lanoue only holed one of his five birdie attempts from inside 10 feet Tuesday at Temple Terrace Golf and Country Club. The Tigers senior couldn't help but poke a little fun at himself after his round.
"I hit the ball really well today, but I could not putt to save my life," Lanoue said. "If I ever learn how to putt I might shoot a 32, or 69 on 18 holes.
It probably didn't hurt Lanoue's sense of humor that he turned in a par 36 for nine holes to lead all scorers and help Jesuit (9-1) to a one-stroke win against King, 159-160.
Jesuit and King finished ahead of Tampa Catholic, which shot 164 as a team behind a career-best 37 from sophomore Ryan Tamashiro.
Tamashiro started with a birdie on his first hole, then fell back with bogeys on his next two holes, but he finished strong with three birdies and a par on his final four holes.
"I started getting hot on the sixth hole," Tamashiro said. "I played a lot better in the summer than I have here in the (high school) season, but I'm starting to get things going the right way now."
A day after the Tigers finished second in an 18-hole tournament at Vinoy, the Tigers were able to just get by King (6-2) on the Lions' home course.
Jesuit got low rounds from juniors Lucas Trim (40), Jamie Sullivan (41) and sophomore Alan Hackney (42), while also getting a 42 non-scoring round from senior JC Cirella.
Lions No. 1 Tyler Weed finished 3 over at 39, while freshman Ajani Liggins turned in a team-low 38 with a nice 8-foot birdie putt on the eighth hole and a par on his final hole.
