Canterbury running back Brent O'Neal proved to be too much to handle for Carrollwood Day. O'Neal ran for 270 yards on 30 carries and scored three touchdowns.
O'Neal, who has Florida International and Wake Forest among his college suitors, scored from 20 yards with 2:25 left in the game to give the Crusaders the win.
"We knew sooner or later he would make plays," CDS coach Lane McLaughlin said.
It was bad enough the Patriots had to worry about O'Neal when Canterbury had the ball. But it was on defense that O'Neal made a play that turned the game.
With the Patriots in Crusaders territory, O'Neal picked off a pass that would set up his game-winning score.
"I saw (Dillon Floyd) going deep and then he came back on a hook and was overthrown," O'Neal said of the play. On the game-winning drive, "the big part of that was my offensive line making holes for me."
Carrollwood Day plays host to Bradenton Christian on Friday at 4 p.m.
