Alonso had to fight Thursday night.
Fight against flags, fight an injury to its quarterback and fight against an inspired Bloomingdale team. In the end, Alonso took everything that was dished out and came out with a 20-14 win against the visiting Bulls.
"I think the fact that we have kids who bought into our system and are willing to do anything (helped tonight)," Alonso coach Brian Emanuel said.
That ability to do anything was tested one play into the second quarter on a on a third-and-11 scramble. Ravens quarterback Brandon Hawkins avoided a sack, gaining 4 yards, but he injured his right (throwing) shoulder when he was tackled.
After a Bloomingdale (3-3, 0-1 Class 8A-District 6) punt, backup QB Ethan Winget came in. A high snap pushed the Ravens back 25 yards. Alonso then intermittently used Winget under center as well as running back Brandon Holloway in the wildcat formation.
The Ravens (5-0, 1-0) scored first in the opening quarter on a 1-yard Holloway run. Holloway finished with 17 carries and 137 yards.
Sophomore Ish Witter (15 carries, 131 yards) ripped off a 50-yard score at the 4:12 mark of the second, giving Alonso a 14-0 advantage. Winget’s 43-yard touchdown pass to Eddie Castillo put the Ravens ahead 20-0.
Bloomingdale capitalized on several Alonso mistakes, scoring its first touchdown one play after recovering a punt. Cody Crouse hit Adam Posateri (seven catches, 152 yards) on a 26-yard strike with 1:25 left in the third. Eugene Baker, who ran fro a season-low 70 yards, later scored from 3 yards out.
