Sometimes it takes special plays to give a team a jolt.
In the case of Carrollwood Day, it was a blocked extra point and then an 80-yard kickoff return by Robert Davis that sparked the Patriots to a Class 2A-District 5 win against the Warriors.
Davis' return followed a Calvary touchdown that cut the Carrollwood lead to 14-13 with 10:41 remaining in the third quarter. It gave the Patriots a 21-13 lead but, more importantly, sparked the Carrollwood defense.
Carrollwood increased its lead to 28-13 when Deuce Gruden, playing in his last high school game, threw his second touchdown pass of the game when he hit Dillon Floyd for a 7-yard score with 4:54 remaining.
Calvary pulled to within seven on a 27-yard TD pass from backup quarterback Jeremy Wood to Bradley Jordan. Derek Barnes scored the 2-point conversion.
The teams traded possessions but Calvary turned it over on downs and the Patriots took a knee to end the game.
