CLEARWATER — Clearwater Central Catholic scored touchdowns on four of its first five possession on its way to a 35-14 victory against Class 3A-District 5 rival St Petersburg Catholic.
It was quarterback Jeff Smith's rushing TD run on the Marauders' opening possession that set the tone for the game.
After the defense stopped the Barons on fourth-and-2 from their own 40, Smith guided a four-play drive that culminated in his 6-yard touchdown run to the outside.
The Marauders scored touchdowns on their next two offensive possessions — a 2-yard touchdown run by Connor Dorris and a 3-yard run by Diquan Walker — to make it 21-0.
With the score at 28-0, St Petersburg Catholic took some momentum into the third quarter after Smith fumbled and Elevisi Halapio returned it 62 yards for a touchdown seconds before halftime.
The deficit was cut to 28-14 on a 33-yard run by Tony Jones.
Quarterback Jack Sheehan threw a costly interception with the Barons driving late in the fourth, setting up CJ Cotman's 99-yard touchdown run that put the game away.
