The Tribune’s Top-10 rankings this week feature some movement, but had no teams drop out from the last top-10 report. Tampa Catholic and Plant City moved up two spots to get the Crusaders and Raiders their highest rankings of the season at No. 5 and No. 6.
The poll awards points for each place voted on by five panelists who cover the sport extensively in Hillsborough County for the Tampa Tribune/TBO: Mike Camunas, Jarrett Guthrie, Nick Williams, Scott Purks and Doug Jacobs. First-place votes receive 10 points, followed by nine points for second place, and so on. First-place votes appear in parentheses following team totals.
1. Plant (3-0-1) 50 (5)
Up Next: at Tampa Bay Tech (2-1)
Comment: Plant got a bit of scare from Bloomingdale on Friday, and the Panthers better not let up against TBT, which has the ability to beat just about anybody.
2. Armwood (4-0) 45
Up Next: at Jefferson (3-0)
Comment: This game is for the Class 6A-District 8 title, barring a complete meltdown against other district opponents by either the Hawks or the Dragons.
3. Jefferson (3-0) 39
Up Next: Armwood (4-0)
Comment: The Dragons had Friday off to prepare for the all-important district matchup against No. 2 Armwood.
4. Sickles (4-0) 36
Up Next: idle
Comment: Sickles might rise another spot next week, despite taking Friday off. Depends on what happens with Armwood vs. Jefferson.
5. Plant City (3-0) 25
Up Next: at Bloomingdale (2-1)
Comment: The Raiders escaped with a 14-13 win over archrival and district opponent Durant. Now Plant City must be careful against the upstart Bulls.
6. Tampa Catholic (3-1) 23
Up Next: at Sarasota Cardinal Mooney (3-0)
Comment: With quality victories the past three weeks, TC has proven it’s a legitimate contender for a state title in Class 3A.
7. Newsome (3-1) 21
Up Next: Jesuit (1-3)
Comment: The Wolves bounced back with a solid victory over Alonso, a week after struggling against Sickles.
8. Hillsborough (1-2) 14
Up Next: Lennard (0-4)
Comment: The Terriers had two of the toughest games ever to start a season against Jefferson and Armwood. Now it looks like Hillsborough may go on a little winning streak.
9. Tampa Bay Tech (2-1) 13
Up Next: Plant (3-0-1)
Comment: Great opportunity for the Titans to show how good they might be.
10. Gaither (2-2) 5
Up Next: At Durant (0-4)
Comment: Gaither’s up-and-down season continued Friday with a 17-0 shutout of Freedom. Will the Cowboys be up or down after playing the Cougars, who are better than their winless record indicates?
