Believe it or not, the Mitchell boys soccer team was rooting for Wiregrass Ranch on Thursday, and the Bulls were pulling for the Mustangs on Friday.
That’s because it would set up the rematch both teams wanted, and since the Bulls won Thursday and Mitchell dispatched host Eagle Lake Lake Region 3-0 Friday, the district foes will get a third and deciding rematch in the Class 4A-Region 2 semifinals Tuesday.
“We wanted and expected them to win last night, and now it’ll be the best two teams in Pasco County, in my opinion, playing each other,” Mustangs coach Oscar Ubillus said. “Whoever wins two out of three may be the best in Pasco and is going to a region final.”
On Friday, Mitchell (21-3-1) was flat most of the first half until, with five minutes left, Brady Friedman put in a goal that lifted the Mustangs before halftime.
“That Brady goal was huge because it picked us up, and we fought a little harder in the second half,” Ubillus added.
Mitchell added a goal from Nick Bartkus midway through the second, and then Mico Petrovich iced the game with his team-high 31st goal.
