Editor's Note: Once a week, Rays beat writer Marc Lancaster will ask Tampa Bay Rays manager Joe Maddon a question or two submitted by TBO.com users. The answers will be posted each Monday.
Question:
Coach, can you give an overview of what you and your coaches 'call' during the game? When do you get involved, what are all the sign communications between Foley and the batter? Does the coach dictate what the batter does some, most, or all of the time? When you send out signals, is it to the team or the other coaches?
-- Patrick Davis, Tampa
Answer:
"A lot of our coaching occurs prior to the game. In spring training, we talk about situations every day, and when the season's in progress, based on the teams that we're playing, we talk about situations in advance. I'm talking about good running situations, maybe a good hit-and-run situation, all of our defensive stuff - all that stuff is discussed and prepared prior to the game. There are some things that we call during the game, but for the most part I prefer our players to just go out and play, uninhibited. I think when you do that, you get your most athletic and best play. So we interfere on occasion, but for the most part, a lot of the stuff is handled before the game begins."
