CORAL GABLES - Wide receiver Sam Shields was held out against Duke by Coach Randy Shannon.
"It was tough, but I had to deal with my consequences and cheer on who was playing," Shields said.
Shields was dressed in full pads, but had to watch from the sidelines.
"It's a lesson learned," he said. "I just have to stay focused with what I'm doing and stay on top of my stuff."
It was the second game Shields has been held out this year. The first time was the season opener.
Shannon said Shields was held out due to not practicing well, which did not come at a good time for Shields, who had a career-high six catches for 117 yards against Texas A&M.
"Yeah, it made it harder watching it knowing you had a big game last week," Shields said.
Shields is back this week, but is unsure of his playing time.
"I'm playing, but I don't know - first team, second team - I don't know nothing about that, but if I get in, I have to do my job."
NOT MAKING PLAYS: DE Calais Campbell was named the ACC Defensive Lineman of the Week for recording 2 1/2 sacks against Duke, but Shannon thinks Campbell, the reigning team MVP, should be doing more.
"He's missed too many tackles for me, this defense, and the team," Shannon said. "We don't accept it."
