TEMPE, Ariz. - The San Diego Chargers, some of them forced from their homes by the threat of wildfires, worked out at the Arizona Cardinals' training facility Wednesday and awaited word on where and when their next game will be played.

San Diego Mayor Jerry Sanders planned to decide today whether the Chargers will be able to play Houston as scheduled Sunday at their Qualcomm Stadium home.

'We're waiting as long as we can to assess the need for a shelter as large as Qualcomm,' the mayor's spokesman, Fred Sainz, said Wednesday.

BENGALS: Receiver Chris Henry returned to practice Wednesday with the NFL's permission, allowing him to work back into shape while serving the last two games of his suspension.

DOLPHINS: Middle linebacker Zach Thomas might not make the trip to London because he was in a minor car accident. 'There's potential for whiplash, and that is what we're looking into, to my knowledge,' Coach Cam Cameron said.

FALCONS: Quarterback Byron Leftwich underwent surgery on his right ankle Wednesday and will be out three to four weeks.

49ERS: Quarterback Alex Smith proved he can make all the throws during practice Wednesday, and he claims his injured right shoulder is ready to take the hits. Coach Mike Nolan will wait before choosing Sunday's starter.

JETS: Coach Eric Mangini said he's sticking with Chad Pennington as his starting quarterback.

NFL MEETINGS: The NFL added $10 million to its medical fund for retired players Wednesday, designating the money for joint replacement surgery, cardiovascular screening and assisted living.

PANTHERS: Coach John Fox says QB David Carr will play if he's healthy, but may not start. Carr says he's getting healthy and expects to start. Carolina placed reserve running back Nick Goings on injured reserve.

PATRIOTS: Defensive end Richard Seymour (knee) practiced Wednesday for the first time this season.

RAIDERS: The NFL gave approval to allow the Raiders to sell a 20 percent minority interest in the team to a small group of investors. The deal gives the group no control of the franchise now or in the future.

RAMS: Coach Scott Linehan said unless he suffers a setback during the week, running back Steven Jackson will play Sunday.

TEXANS: QB Matt Schaub practiced Wednesday, but is still listed as day to day with a bruised hip for Sunday's game vs. San Diego.
