GO FISHING is a daily look at the area fishing scene through the eyes of local charter boat captains and fishing guides. Today: Billy Nobles (left, with Reel Animals partner Mike Anderson).
Now's the time. It doesn't matter whether you want to catch snook, reds, snapper or grouper - it's happening.
There is plenty of bait in the Bay and plenty of Spanish mackerel to go around. I had the pleasure during the weekend to fish with Adam, a 10-year-old who has been diagnosed with cancer but who has been in remission for nearly two years.
I fished with him in the Southern Equipment Make-A-Wish tournament out of Little Harbor Resort in Ruskin on Saturday. I picked up Adam, sister Ashley and mother Nancy at 9 a.m. By 11 a.m., Adam had caught and released one goliath grouper and 25-30 snook, all in the 20- to 25-inch range.
Then Adam said, 'My arms are tired, can we do something else?'
I thought for a moment and told him we can go shelling, swimming or we could just ride around and let him drive the boat or ride jet skis.
He lit up like a Christmas tree, and Josh from Boat Works at Little Harbor took Adam up the Little Manatee River. They saw dozens of alligators and had a great time.
