GO FISHING is a daily look at the area fishing scene through the eyes of local charter boat captains and fishing guides. Today: Mike Anderson, right (with 'Reel Animals' partner Billy Nobles).
Heavy afternoon rains mixed with slightly cooling temps are sending a good signal. The fall bite is cranking up.
This week the snook seemed to show up in good numbers in their traditional fall spots. With plenty of bait still on the flats, the fishing was very steady this week.
We enjoyed several days of good redfish action along the shores of Cockroach Bay. The redfish we found were in small schools of around 20 to 30 fish with a good mix of upper-end slot fish and some slightly over slot. They fed aggressively on greenbacks floated under popping corks and we also caught several on Berkley Gulp shrimp in molting and new-penny colors.
It is a surefire sign that things are getting right with our snook bite when we can get them to eat artificials in the middle of the day. The cooler water temps make them much more aggressive. We caught several good slot fish this week on Berkley Jerk Shad and even a couple on Gold weedless spoons.
Things will only get better as we move further into the fall and more and more of our snook head up into the rivers.
