Twins Promote Pitcher Liriano

The Minnesota Twins have promoted pitcher Francisco Liriano from Triple-A and cut pitcher Livan Hernandez and outfielder Craig Monroe.

"It's what I was waiting for," said Liriano, who will start Sunday's series finale against Cleveland. "I'm so happy to be here."

Liriano was 10-2 with a 3.28 ERA at Triple-A. A rookie star with the Twins in 2006, he missed the 2007 season because of Tommy John surgery. Last month, Liriano's agent asked the players' union to investigate why the Twins had not moved the lefty back to the majors.

Hernandez and Monroe were designated for release or assignment. Hernandez was 10-8 with a 5.48 ERA and Monroe hit .202 with eight home runs and 29 RBIs.

The Twins also selected the contract of first baseman/designated hitter Randy Ruiz from Rochester.

METS: Right-hander John Maine will skip his next scheduled start to give more rest to his sore throwing shoulder.

Maine (9-7, 4.13 ERA) was diagnosed Tuesday with a mild strain in his right rotator cuff. Oliver Perez (7-6) will start in Maine's place for Sunday's series finale against Houston.

Maine will throw a bullpen session on Sunday in Houston. Manager Jerry Manuel said Maine will make his next start against Florida next Friday.

TIGERS: Reliever Todd Jones has tendinitis in his right shoulder.

An MRI exam showed Jones does not have a major injury. He was placed on the 15-day disabled list Thursday, expects to get a cortisone shot and plans to hold off throwing until at least next weekend.

The 40-year-old Jones, who recently lost his closer's job, was 4-1 with 18 saves and a 5.05 ERA. There is no timetable for when he will return.
