TAMPA - Bucs receiver Michael Clayton is not the common LSU fan, which explains why a recent challenge to teammate Joey Galloway mirrored his flamboyant personality.
Clayton was a standout receiver at LSU; Galloway began his brilliant career at Ohio State. As those teams play in tonight's BCS Championship Game, Clayton persuaded Galloway to wager something more valuable than dinner at Bern's Steak House.
How about my Bentley vs. your Mercedes-Benz?
Clayton owns a Bentley and convinced Galloway to wager his Mercedes-Benz SL 500 against the LSU receiver's luxury ride. Although Clayton's vehicle is worth more than Galloway's, he is already looking forward to his new car.
"Clearly if I put my Bentley up against his SL, I got to believe we're going to win," Clayton said. "There is only one bad part. It's only for two weeks.
"He has a brand new red Mercedes. I'm going to put rims on it and everything because he's an old man. He doesn't have any rims on it."
Clayton, who is confident the Tigers' defensive line will help retain his car keys, helped lead LSU to a co-national championship in 2003. He also helped the Tigers win two SEC championships (2001 and 2003) and was Tampa Bay's first-round draft pick (15th overall) in 2004.
Although four years removed from school, Clayton is betting his alma mater can give him two weeks in Galloway's flashy automobile.
"I'm going to let my wife drive it. I might just paint an LSU Tiger on the back of that thing, too," Clayton said. Anwar S. Richardson
