TAMPA University of South Florida offensive coordinator Greg Gregory said he is interested in the head coaching position at his alma mater, Richmond, after Spiders coach Dave Clawson left Friday to become offensive coordinator at Tennessee.
Gregory, Virginia defensive coordinator Mike London and Richmond defensive coordinator Russ Huesman are the leading candidates, the Richmond-Times Dispatch reported.
Gregory, 50, has been at USF three seasons and just completed his first season as USF's offensive coordinator. Under Gregory, USF improved its scoring per game from 23 to 34.7 points a game, including a 14-point increase per game in Big East play, and averaged 414 yards per game, compared to 362 last season.
"Definitely I have a very strong interest," Gregory said. "I'm hoping they'll have an interest in me.
That's like a dream to go back to your alma mater as a head coach. It could be the final stop in my coaching career if everything worked out right."
