Lacy's Retirement Turns Out To Be Extremely Short-Lived

Three days after St. Petersburg super middleweight Jeff Lacy said his boxing career was done, he's back.

Lacy (24-1, 17 KOs) will face former Olympic teammate Jermain Taylor (27-2-1, 17 KOs) on Nov. 15 at a site to be determined.

Friday, Lacy said he was retiring from the sport because it was a dirty business. The following day he revealed he was unhappy with the $550,000 offered to fight Taylor, which was increased from the original $500,000 offer.

Lacy, who defeated Epifanio Mendoza last Wednesday by majority decision, did not reveal what his new payday would be, but he said it was "enough to bring me out of retirement."

"It's back on," he said. "Like I said, they had to come up. You have to do certain things. ... I'm not doing this for free. I was always looking forward to fighting Jermain Taylor, but it had to be for the right reasons. When it's all stacked up against me, what was I supposed to do? Let someone get things for free?"

Golden Boy Promotions COO David Itskowitch said he called Lacy and his adviser, Jim Wilkes, on Monday and offered a better deal. "I spoke to Jeff this morning and I asked him what the number was for him to take the fight and he told me and we got it done."

It was a conversation that didn't take much time once the new number was presented, Itskowitch said.

"It's a fight that has sort of been inevitable since these guys were amateurs," said Taylor's promoter, Lou DiBella. "If it's ever going to happen, this is probably the time for it to happen."
