Kentucky Crushes Louisville

»  Comments | Post a Comment

Kentucky's defense looked plenty capable of carrying the Wildcats until the offense catches up.

Ashton Cobb returned a Louisville fumble 28 yards for a touchdown and Myron Pryor returned another fumble 72 yards for a score as the Wildcats embarrassed Louisville 27-2 in the Governor's Cup on Sunday.

Tony Dixon added a 7-yard touchdown run for the Wildcats, who have won two straight against their archrivals for the first time in a decade.

Kentucky quarterback Mike Hartline threw for 147 yards and avoided major mistakes in his first college start, and the Wildcats' defense shut down Louisville, holding the Cardinals without a touchdown for the first time since a shutout loss to Florida State in 2000.

Kentucky forced five turnovers and stuffed Louisville's retooled offense, playing with the kind tenacity Coach Rich Brooks said the Wildcats would need early in the season while his team's inexperienced offense found its footing. UK held Louisville, which averaged 416.5 yards per game a year ago, to just 205 yards.

COLORADO 38,

COLORADO STATE 17

DENVER - Josh Smith bounced back from a rocky start with a 93-yard kickoff return for a touchdown and Colorado beat Colorado State in what might have been its last game at Invesco Field.

Many fans surely tuned in expecting to see Smith's nephew, Darrell Scott, the Buffaloes' highly touted freshman tailback who was considered by several scouting services as the best back in the nation last year.

Scott gained 50 yards on a dozen carries and leaped over the pile for a 1-yard TD to cap the scoring in the closing minutes. But this night belonged to his uncle, as the speedy Smith racked up 189 total yards.

GEORGIA: Defensive tackle Jeff Owens will have knee surgery and miss the rest of the season.

OREGON: Offensive tackle Fenuki Tupou missed the Ducks' season-opening win against Washington because in July he accepted a meal and received $100 from the representative of a professional sport management firm.

TEXAS: Defensive tackle Lamarr Houston was arrested on a misdemeanor drunken driving charge in Austin, Texas, a few hours after the No. 11 Longhorns' 52-10 win against Florida Atlantic.

Sean Weatherspoon bailed out the defense with two late takeaways and Jeremy Maclin had a 99-yard kickoff return and 45-yard punt return before leaving in the fourth quarter with a sprained left ankle in Missouri's win against Illinois.

No. 15 ARIZONA STATE 30,

NORTHERN ARIZONA 13

TEMPE, Ariz. - Rudy Carpenter threw for 388 yards and a touchdown, and Dimitri Nance ran for two scores to lead Arizona State past Northern Arizona.
