Bucs' 3rd receiver slot still up in the air

With only one official day of training camp remaining the battle for the starting quarterback's job is not the only camp battle that remains unresolved.

Thanks to a lack of consistency by the combatants, the Bucs don't have a good read yet on who their third wide receiver will be, either.

The leader of that race seems to be Brian Clark, but Clark hasn't performed all that well in practice. The opposite is true of Maurice Stovall, who has looked good in practice but disappeared during last week's game at Tennessee.

The inconsistency has created an opportunity for the likes of Sammie Stroughter, Mario Urrutia and Cortez Hankton, but none have truly seized the opportunity yet, according to Bucs coach Raheem Morris.

"I need somebody to step up," Morris said. "Somebody has to step up on third downs and say I'm going to be the man you need to double team out of those two guys or if you leave me open, I'm going to win.

"That guy has to be our Vinny Johnson. He's got to be like (Elbert) Mack on defense. He's got to come in cold, take the ball on the wing and hit a 3-pointer for us."

FOOD FOR THOUGHT: Morris has stressed mental toughness throughout training camp. Mike Beadles has applied those principles.

Beadles, 40, is the Bucs' executive chef, and since Tampa Bay shifted training camp from Disney's Wide World of Sports to One Buc Place, Beadles' workload has increased.

"When they were in Orlando, I cooked once a day for 25 people, so I loved it," Beadles said. "Now, we're at about 200 to 250 a meal. That's one of the biggest differences."

Beadles' staff arrives daily at One Buc Place at 5 a.m. The last person leaves around 10 p.m. During the regular season he prepares breakfast for approximately 100 to 125 people, lunch for up to 200 and dinner for about 50.

For training camp, Beadles worked up a schedule a month in advance and, unlike Morris, nobody has second-guessed any of his decisions.

"The biggest special request is usually health-related," Beadles said. "If somebody is allergic to seafood, we'll find something else for them, but usually everybody is happy."

LIVE UPGRADES: The play of the offensive line was one of the things the Bucs were most disappointed in following their 27-20 loss to Tennessee on Saturday. Even more disappointing is the fact the line won't have a chance to truly correct its mistakes until the Bucs take on Jacksonville in their second preseason game Saturday.

"We can't practice against our own team the way we need to so you've just got to study it, look at it and simulate it the best way you can (in practice) and then take advantage of your opportunities to improve in a live situation," line coach Pete Mangurian said. "That means getting work we need in games."

INJURY UPDATE: DE Stylez G. White (shoulder) was the only new addition to the injury report Tuesday. C Jeff Faine (groin) was absent for most of the day as well, one day after returning to the practice field.
