Since USF doesn't play Northern Illinois in the International Bowl until Jan. 2, Bulls coach Jim Leavitt is easing the team back into practice following a recent stretch that included a week off for finals.
The team practiced Thursday in just shells (helmets, shoulder pads) and probably won't return to full pads until Monday.
"As we get closer, what we'll do is strengthen the workouts a little more," Leavitt said. "Conditioning concerns me a little bit, but not yet."
This week, the Bulls are mostly watching film of Northern Illinois and will begin to try to simulate some of the Huskies' tendencies in practice next week.
INJURY UPDATE: Senior LB Kion Wilson, who did not play in the regular-season finale at Connecticut, has looked sharp in drills, Leavitt said.
However, RT Jake Sims (concussion) and RG Zach Hermann (neck) remain sidelined.
"Are those guys going to be able to play in the game? Doubtful," Leavitt said.
C Sampson Genus, hampered by a knee injury, is running and Leavitt remains hopeful he can play against Northern Illinois. Finally, walk-on special teams player Joel Miller, at the center of an investigation that Leavitt made improper contact with him last month, returned to practice. Miller left Wednesday's practice early to have an MRI on his injured shoulder.
