Holmgren to join Browns

The Cleveland Browns say Mike Holmgren has agreed to become their president.

Browns owner Randy Lerner said the two sides reached a deal Monday. Lerner says details still need to be worked out and a formal announcement will be made by next week.

On Saturday, the 61-year-old Holmgren had turned down a front-office position to return to the Seattle Seahawks, sparking speculation that he was headed to Cleveland.

Holmgren said he was intrigued by the Cleveland opportunity because of the absence of "layers" between him and Lerner.

The Browns improved to 3-11 on Sunday under first-year coach Eric Mangini with a 41-34 victory against Kansas City.

BEARS: Defensive end Adewale Ogunleye will miss the rest of the season because of a fracture in his lower left leg.

CARDINALS: Left tackle Mike Gandy had surgery to repair a sports hernia.

COWBOYS: Dallas cut kicker Nick Folk and replaced him with Shaun Suisham, an ex-Cowboy.

JAGUARS: Placed linebacker Clint Ingram on injured reserve and signed linebacker Tank Daniels. Ingram injured his shoulder Dec. 13 against Miami.

RAVENS: Rookie cornerback Lardarius Webb will miss the remainder of the season with a torn ligament in his right knee.

STEELERS: Receiver Limas Sweed and long snapper Greg Warren will miss the rest of the season.

Sweed is on the reserve non-football illness list. Warren, a fifth-year pro, has been placed on the reserve/injured list. He injured his right knee after tearing his anterior cruciate ligament on the final play of Sunday's game against Green Bay.

TITANS: Linebacker Keith Bulluck has a torn left anterior cruciate ligament and will miss the rest of the season. Outside linebacker David Thornton will have season-ending shoulder surgery this week.

VIKINGS: Coach Brad Childress says he considered taking Brett Favre out of the game against Carolina because the quarterback "was taking a beating."

Favre and Childress had what the quarterback called "a heated exchange" in the third quarter of Minnesota's loss at Carolina on Sunday night.

Childress said Monday that he was considering putting Tarvaris Jackson in after watching Favre get sacked four times and hit on numerous other occasions.

Favre strongly objected and lobbied to stay in the game. The Vikings were leading 7-6 at the time and Childress decided to keep Favre on the field.

LEGAL: Former Cleveland Browns general manager George Kokinis has filed for arbitration against the team for firing him.
