Leavitt enthused over JuCo recruits

University of South Florida football coach Jim Leavitt finally could talk about two of the Bulls' most highly touted recruits Tuesday: junior college transfers Claude Davis and Curtis Weatherspoon.

Davis, a 6-foot-4, 250-pound defensive end who played at Lake Gibson before going to junior college, is a player Leavitt hopes will help fill the void created by the loss of senior George Selvie next season.

"Claude is a guy who we think is really going to be an outstanding defensive end," Leavitt said. "He'll really help us in the pass rush. He's got great speed."

Weatherspoon, a safety/outside linebacker from Valdosta, Ga., is transferring from Dean (Mass.) Junior College. Weatherspoon, listed at 6-2 and 205, is expected to play outside linebacker.

"Weatherspoon has really got great speed," Leavitt said. "He can really run the field. We're always looking for speed, and that was his deal."

Both players signed letters-of-intent Monday and are scheduled to enroll in classes in January.

BULL BITS: USF is holding a closed practice this morning before players and coaches break until Sunday for the Christmas holiday. ... Senior RB Mo Plancher, who is seeking a sixth year of eligibility, is expected to enroll in classes in January as his case is heard by the NCAA.
