Dixon In Top Spot

As Scott Dixon headed into the pits following qualifying Thursday afternoon, all he could hear in his headset was silence.

The 2008 Indy 500 and IndyCar Series champion figured his team's quest to surprise the field and win the pole in LMP1 had come up short - until he saw his crew jumping up and down.

"It's a little bit unexpected," Dixon said after driving the No. 66 de Ferran Racing Acura ARX-02a to the pole position for Saturday's 57th annual Mobil 1 Twelve Hours of Sebring. "We were shooting for the pole, but realistically, we were looking at a third or fourth."

Dixon took the radical Acura prototype around Sebring's 3.7-mile, 17-turn track in 1 minute, 45.278 seconds, with an average speed of 126.522 mph. That was just ahead of Audi's No. 2 car, driven by Tom Kristensen, which ran its best lap in 1:45.360, and Peugeot's No. 07, driven by Christian Klien at 1:45.462.

Adrian Fernandez grabbed his first career pole in 1:49.686 to pace the LMP2 class, and Dirk Werner grabbed the GT2 pole with a 2:03.051 lap.
