USF fails to make the grade

The University of South Florida's football program has the nation's worst Academic Progress Report (APR) among BCS conference schools.

USF's men's basketball program had the nation's third-worst APR.

The APR is based on the eligibility, retention and graduation of each scholarship student-athlete. The reports are based on NCAA data submitted by each institution for the academic years between 2004-05 and 2007-08.

Despite USF's APR scores dropping in both sports, the Bulls avoided scholarship penalties. The football program received an NCAA waiver for a second consecutive year.

"I am pleased with the academic progress of our football and men's basketball programs," USF AD Doug Woolard said. "Our football and men's basketball teams continue to make improvements and are steadily increasing their scores."

USF, Arkansas, Colorado and Purdue are the BCS' only schools with the football and men's basketball programs both among the nation's 10 worst.

Last year, USF had the nation's third-worst football APR and 10th-worst men's basketball APR.
