Basketball recruit Famous may spurn USF

Whether University of South Florida men's basketball recruit Jarrid Famous wants out of his letter-of-intent depends on who you ask, but this much is certain: Famous is not revealing his plans.

A 6-foot-11 center from Westchester (N.Y.) Community College, Famous did not return messages from The Tampa Tribune for a second consecutive day. Tuesday, Westchester assistant Mickey Carey told the Tribune that Famous no longer wanted to attend USF because he no longer felt comfortable with USF or Coach Stan Heath.

However, Famous' father, Jerome, told the Tribune his son was still headed to USF. "He's never complained about USF to me," Jerome Famous said.

Heath will visit Famous on Sunday, Westchester coach Tyrone Mushat said.

Mushat and Carey said Wednesday that Westchester AD Larry Massaroni asked them not to comment any further on Famous' situation.

If Famous, who averaged 25.2 points and 13.7 rebounds last season, isn't granted his release from USF, he is willing to sit out the 2009-10 season before going to another school in 2010-11, Carey said Tuesday.

•USF guard Dominique Jones has been invited to the 2009 USA Basketball World University Games Team training camp, June 16-24 at the U.S. Olympic Training Center in Colorado Springs, Colo.

FLORIDA STATE: Wide receiver Richard Goodman has been suspended for his part in a fight that took place on campus last fall.

Goodman turned himself into the Leon County Jail on Tuesday after he was charged with aggravated battery with a deadly weapon causing great bodily harm. He posted bond and was released.

Goodman is the third football player charged in the fight. Two others were charged with battery in November 2008.

Coach Bobby Bowden said Wednesday that Goodman is suspended indefinitely "until the matter has been resolved."

Authorities say Goodman threw a chair that struck a woman in the face during a fight that broke out between FSU football players and members of the Phi Beta Sigma fraternity last fall. The woman suffered extensive injuries.
