INJURIES: Lightning - D Paul Ranger (personal leave), out; D Mattias Ohlund (foot) day-to-day. Hurricanes - C Eric Staal (upper body), G Cam Ward (leg laceration), C Michael Ryan (concussion), out; D Joni Pitkanen (lower body), G Michael Leighton (lower body), RW Scott Walker (upper body), questionable.

NEED TO KNOW: Tampa Bay is 1-0-1 against Carolina this season. ... The Hurricanes have gone to overtime in their past four games. Carolina endured a 14-game winless streak from Oct. 10 to Nov. 11, and it was snapped Sunday in a shootout victory against Minnesota. ... Tampa Bay is winless (0-5-2) in its past seven trips to RBC Center. The Lightning's last victory in Raleigh came Nov. 8, 2007. ... G Mike Smith is expected to make his third consecutive start. He is 1-4-3 in eight career games vs. Carolina, but has allowed three goals in two meetings this season. ... Tampa Bay is 4-0-3 in its past seven games and 3-0-2 in past five on the road. ... LW Ryan Malone, who was credited with the Lightning's third goal in Thursday's 4-3 overtime loss in Anaheim, has four goals and five assists during a season-long five-game scoring streak. ... The Hurricanes are 4-5-2 at home.
