Singleton stars as Seminoles beat Mercer

Leonard Hamilton wanted to give Chris Singleton a double-double on his 20th birthday, but the sophomore forward just wanted to win.

Singleton's happy birthday came at the expense of Mercer's homecoming game Saturday night as Florida State defeated the Bears 89-50.

The birthday boy was one point shy of a double-double, but was impressive in all facets of the game with nine points, 14 rebounds, seven assists and two blocks.

"I think his unselfish spirit, his character has been contagious," Hamilton said of Singleton. "I left him in the game for a minute or so just so he could get a double-double. He refused to shoot the ball. He was just playing the game the way it's supposed to be played. That type of attitude is what this team seems to be all about."

The Seminoles flexed their defensive muscles once again, and also set some records at Mercer's University Center. Florida State blocked 13 shots - the most blocks by a team ever in the University Center since it opened in 2004. The Bears' 50 points was also the lowest score by a team in the arena, and all of the field goals they made in the first half were from 3-point range.

"We're a lot further along than we were last year," Singleton said.

It was an all-around team effort, with five Seminoles scoring in double figures. Deividas Dulkys led with 14 points, Jordan Demercy, Xavier Gibson and Solomon Alabi each scored 12 points.
