Although the University of South Florida is light years away from the program's simple beginning, it will face a familiar foe Saturday when it travels to Bowling Green, Ky., to play Western Kentucky.
During USF's first four seasons (1997-2000), the Bulls and Hilltoppers met annually with WKU winning the first two meetings and USF taking the final two. This will be the first time, however, the schools meet as Division I-A teams. USF is favored by 24 points.
WKU, which is in its first season as a bowl-eligible member of the Sun Belt Conference, is excited about hosting the Bulls.
"It's huge for our community and our program, just as far as hosting a Big East Conference opponent," WKU coach David Elson said. "We really expect it to be an atmosphere that really has never been matched here on campus. I fully expect us to set an attendance record. But most importantly for us it's a great opportunity to bounce back from a disappointing first-game performance (a 63-7 loss at Tennessee) and really show what we're capable of.
INJURY UPDATE: Sophomore SS Jerrell Young, who broke his arm in the second quarter of Saturday's win against Wofford, will be checked out by a doctor today, USF coach Jim Leavitt said. Also, TE Andreas Shields (ankle) should be available Saturday, but the status of fellow TE Kenneth Luberice (foot) won't be known until Wednesday, Leavitt said.
