Cracks are beginning to show for the Rays as a frustrating season nears its conclusion.
Shortly before the Rays' players went out to stretch for batting practice Wednesday afternoon, Carl Crawford shouted at Pat Burrell for a minute or two in the middle of the clubhouse.
Burrell didn't respond, and James Shields eventually stepped in front of Crawford to halt the confrontation.
Manager Joe Maddon met with both players individually and later brushed off questions about what happened.
"It was nothing," Maddon said. "Honestly - I talked to both parties, everything's good."
Crawford declined to elaborate and Burrell wasn't available for comment.
Durham takes commanding lead: LF Rashad Eldridge drove in three runs with two doubles and a homer to lead Durham past Scranton 4-1 Wednesday, giving the Bulls a 2-0 lead in the best-of-five Governor's Cup finals. Yankees starter Ian Kennedy held the Bulls hitless for three innings before departing, but Durham broke through on Kei Igawa and sealed the win. Game 3 is tonight in Scranton. ... The start of Charlotte's decisive fifth game against Tampa for the Florida State League title was delayed nearly 21/2 hours by rain; the result was unavailable at press time.
Odds and ends: RHP Wade Davis promised to bring "a little bit different attitude" to his start tonight after getting knocked around by the Red Sox on Saturday. ... Shields, who is scheduled to start Friday, will fly home early today rather than wait to take the team charter that won't arrive in St. Petersburg until the wee hours of Friday morning.
