Fisher lays into Noles after 'disappointing' practice

Since taking over FSU head coaching duties in January, Jimbo Fisher has repeatedly talked about his football program having "One Voice."

On Wednesday afternoon, after the last practice of the spring, that one voice was seething.

"I thought the first half of practice was very good," Fisher said. "I thought the second half, they quit. They didn't practice worth a flip on either side.

"We're back to the same old routine."

Fisher then added sarcastically: "But they get to play and a have a good time on Saturday (in the spring game), so I guess that's what matters."

The first-year head coach was given a list of eight players who reporters wished to interview after practice. Fisher crossed them all out.

Which left the coach as the only person standing in front of microphones Wednesday. And he had plenty to say.

"(They) didn't practice hard, didn't execute," Fisher said. "Gave up big plays on defense - (the offense) ran it down their throats. Couldn't pick up a blitz on offense. Ain't got a back that's got any toughness. Ain't got receivers that can make a play. Quarterback didn't play worth a flip.

"It's in the culture. It's in the mentality. We accept it around here."

Since it was the last practice of the spring, Fisher was asked if he thought if his team had taken a last-day-of-school type of approach to Wednesday afternoon.

He quickly shot that down.

"You don't have that mentality," he said. "If you have that mentality, you're not going to play here. We'll just recruit new ones. Get rid of the (current) ones and recruit new ones."

With the spring game just three days away, Fisher had been hoping his team would be peaking as Saturday approached. Especially considering how he's made a strong push to make the Garnet & Gold game an event that will attract 50,000 fans to Doak Campbell Stadium.

Instead he walked off the practice field as mad as he's been all spring.

"It was very disappointing," Fisher said. "Because people are going to support them and come to them and they don't want to play any harder than that. That disappoints me, it really does. It's not fair to the fans.

"Sometimes a leopard doesn't change its spots. So we'll see. We'll have to wait until next fall to find out."

If nothing changes between now and then?

"We'll be mediocre, we'll all accept it and be happy," Fisher said sarcastically.
