If Tampa Bay Rays manager Joe Maddon wants to wear a hooded sweatshirt in the dugout during games, or anywhere else for that matter, that's fine with New England Patriots coach Bill Belichick.
Belichick - never one to go against the establishment himself, of course - sent Maddon a gray hooded Patriots sweatshirt Wednesday. In a typed note, Belichick said, "From one hoodie wearer to another, I thought I'd pass along my complete support with something to wear."
You'll recall that on the Rays' last road trip, Maddon was told by Major League Baseball in Boston that he could no longer wear the Rays hoodie that he favors for cool- weather games. He didn't like the ruling and threatened to invite the help of Belichick, who often wears a hoodie on the sidelines while coaching.
Belichick didn't need to get involved, as it turned out. Maddon was informed in Chicago on the final leg of the road trip that the commissioner's office had reconsidered the issue and the hoodie was fine.
Hoodie-gate, as Maddon called it, was over.
Maddon said Wednesday he appreciated the gesture from Belichick and will reciprocate. As for the Patriots hoodie itself, don't expect to see Maddon modeling it any time soon: it's going in a glass case for display in his office.
