The Yankees acquired pitcher Kerry Wood from the Indians on Saturday, the third deal in less than 24 hours for the World Series champions as they beefed up for the stretch run.
Wood, a hard-throwing, 33-year-old righty, gives the Yankees another setup option alongside Joba Chamberlain for closer Mariano Rivera.
The Yankees sent Cleveland a player to be named or $500,000, and the Indians gave New York $2,172,131. New York will pay $1.5 million of the $3.7 million remaining on Wood's $10.5 million salary this year. His contract includes an $11 million team option for 2011.
Meanwhile, New York finalized its deal to obtain designated hitter Lance Berkman from Houston along with $4 million for reliever Mark Melancon and minor-league infielder Jimmy Paredes.
On Friday, the Yankees acquired outfielder Austin Kearns from the Indians for a player to be named.
BRAVES: Atlanta made a five-player deal to upgrade its outfield and an already formidable bullpen, acquiring Rick Ankiel and right-hander Kyle Farnsworth from Kansas City for reliever Jesse Chavez, outfielder Gregor Blanco and minor league pitcher Tim Collins.
CARDINALS: St. Louis was the prime player in a three-team trade, getting right-hander Jake Westbrook from Cleveland and sending outfielder Ryan Ludwick to San Diego.
DIAMONDBACKS: Arizona traded catcher Chris Snyder, minor-league shortstop Pedro Ciriaco and cash to the Pirates for former AL Rookie of the Year Bobby Crosby, outfielder Ryan Church and right-hander D.J. Carrasco.
DODGERS: Los Angeles acquired left-hander Ted Lilly and infielder Ryan Theriot from the Cubs for infielder Blake DeWitt and minor-league right-handers Kyle Smit and Brett Wallach. Also, the Dodgers boosted their bullpen by getting Octavio Dotel from the Pirates for right-hander James McDonald and minor-league outfielder Andrew Lambo.
GIANTS: San Francisco acquired Javier Lopez from the Pirates, getting the left-handed reliever it was looking for at the trade deadline. The Giants sent right-hander Joe Martinez and outfielder John Bowker to Pittsburgh.
RED SOX: Boston acquired catcher Jarrod Saltalamacchia from the Rangers for two minor-leaguers, a player to be named and cash. In other moves, the Red Sox sent reliever Ramon Ramirez to the Giants for pitching prospect Daniel Turpen. Boston designated outfielder Jeremy Hermida for assignment and selected outfielder Ryan Kalish from Pawtucket. Left-hander Dustin Richardson was recalled from Pawtucket.
ROYALS: Manager Ned Yost has received a two-year extension that would keep him in charge through the 2012 season.
